AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve been paying attention to the digital marketing world lately, you’ve probably seen these three acronyms, AEO, GEO, and SEO. Sometimes mentioned together, sometimes tossed around like they’re rivals.
They’re not competing, they’re connected.
Here’s the plain-language version: what SEO, AEO, and GEO mean, and why smart businesses treat all three as one strategy instead of three separate jobs.
SEO: The Foundation
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, the classic practice of improving your website so it ranks higher in search results on Google, Bing, and everywhere else people search.
It covers a lot of ground, keyword research, page speed, site structure, content quality, backlinks, technical health, and more. Get it right, and you get a steady flow of organic traffic from people who are already looking for what you sell.
SEO has been around for decades. It works and it’s the foundation everything else is built on.
But search itself has changed, and two newer practices have grown alongside SEO.
AEO: Be The Answer
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. Where SEO gets you onto the results page, AEO pushes you further, into the direct-answer boxes that show up before any of the actual links.
You’ve seen this happen. Type in “how long does SEO take?” and Google hands you a direct answer at the top of the page, pulled straight from someone’s website. That’s a featured snippet, and that’s AEO doing its job.
It also covers “People Also Ask” boxes, knowledge panels, and voice search, basically anywhere a search engine hands over an answer instead of a list of links to click through.
The goal is simple: structure your content clearly enough that search engines pick your site as the source when they answer that question.

GEO: Show Up in AI Responses
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization, the newest of the three. It’s built to deal with something moving fast right now, AI tools that generate answers instead of handing back a list of links.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, or Bing Copilot a question, those tools pull from content across the web to build a response. Sometimes they cite sources. Sometimes they just fold the information in without naming a source at all.
GEO is about making sure your content is one of the sources these tools trust. It involves building topical authority, using clear and well-structured content, maintaining consistent information across the web, and signalling to AI systems that your site is a credible voice in your industry.

How They Work Together
Think of it like this:
SEO builds the foundation a fast, well-structured site with strong content that earns rankings.
AEO takes that foundation and positions your content to answer questions directly snapping up featured snippets, voice results, and top-of-page real estate at the top of the page.
GEO stretches that reach even further into AI-generated answers. This way your brand still shows up even when someone never clicks through to an actual results page.
At the core, all three run on the same principles; quality content, clear structure, and real authority in your field. If your SEO is solid, you’re already partway to nailing AEO and GEO too. The real difference is knowing how to fine-tune each one and making sure somebody on your team is keeping an eye on all three.
Why This Matters Right Now
Search behaviour is shifting fast. More searches end without a single click. More people are turning to AI tools for answers before they ever open a browser tab. And voice search keeps growing, especially for local queries.
Businesses that adjust their content strategy now — building for answers, not just rankings — will have a real edge over the ones scrambling to catch up later.
At KzS Digital Marketing, we build AEO and GEO into every SEO plan we write. In today’s search landscape, they’re not extras bolted on for good measure — they’re just part of doing the job well.
