The Difference Between Website Hosting and Domain Registration
Hosting and Domain — What’s the Difference?
We get this question all the time. What’s the difference between hosting and domain? They sound similar, but they do very different jobs.
Let’s use a simple car analogy.
Think of your website as a car. Your hosting is the garage where the car is parked. Your domain is the license plate on the car.
Website Hosting
Website Hosting is the storage space where your website lives. It’s a server — a computer connected to the internet 24/7 — that stores all your files, images, and data. When someone visits your site, that server delivers your content to their browser.
Good hosting keeps your site fast, secure, and online around the clock. It also handles things like storage space, bandwidth, and backups.
Back to our analogy: hosting is the garage. It keeps your car safe and ready to go whenever someone needs it.
Domain Registration
A domain is your website’s address. It’s what people type into their browser to find you — like kzsdigitalmarketing.com.
A domain has two parts: the name (e.g., kzsdigitalmarketing) and the extension (e.g., .com, .ca, .org). Together, they give your site a unique identity on the internet.
In our analogy, the domain name is your car’s make and model. The extension is the license plate — it tells people where you’re from and makes you easy to find.
Quick Summary
- Hosting = where your website is stored (the garage)
- Domain = your website’s address (the license plate)
You need both to have a working website. Neither one does the job alone.
